Riepilogo

This article describes how to configure the 3rd-party SIP device of Polycom (model SoundPoint IP601) for status signalling.

Informazioni

The SoundPoint IP phone can watch the presence status of other phones which form the Buddy List. The status of buddies is displayed and updated in real time. Each phone can also be watched by other phones.

  • To add or edit a contact:
    • Press the "Directories" button on the phone and select "Contact Directory".

    • Press "Add" to enter another contact into the telephone's database or highlight an existing entry by using the arrow keys to scroll through the directory to choose a contact and then press "Edit".

    • Enter first and/or last name from the keypad. Press the "1/A/a" soft key to select between numeric and upper/lower case alphanumeric modes. Press the "Encoding" soft key to access special characters in other languages if necessary.

    • Enter the "Contact" number. This is a required field and it must be unique i.e. not already in the directory. Enter the internal number extension or the user name of a SwyxWare user or the IP address of another external device e.g. another Polycom IP phone which supports status signalling.

Note that in the last case status monitoring is not arranged by SwyxServer but by the IP phones among each other without any communication to SwyxServer.

    • "Speed Dial Index", "Ring Type" and "Divert Contact" may be left blank.

    • Use the left or right arrow key to switch between "Enabled" and "Disabled" settings for the last four fields.

    • Press "Save" to confirm or "Cancel" to abandon the changes then press "Exit" to return to the idle display.

Contacts can also be added easily from Call Lists (local lists of missed, received and placed calls):
    • Press "Directories", followed by "Call Lists" and "Missed", "Received" or "Placed Calls" as desired. Call information will be displayed.

    • Press "More" to get additional choices, followed by "Save" to store the contact to the Contact Directory.

  • To add or delete a contact from your buddy list, or block a contact:
    • Press the "Directories" button on the phone and select "Contact Directory".

    • Using the arrow keys, scroll through the directory to choose a contact. Then press "Edit".

    • Scroll down to the "Watch Buddy" field and use the left or right arrow key to switch between "Enabled" or "Disabled" status depending on whether you want to activate or deactivate status monitoring for this contact.

    • To block or unblock a contact scroll down to the "Block Buddy" field and use the arrow keys to switch between "Enabled" or "Disabled".

Note: SwyxServer does not transmit any information that the status of a SwyxWare contact is monitored by another user to the appropriate phone. Therefore, blocking internal SwyxWare users does not prevent them to continue monitoring your status!

    • Press "Save" to confirm or "Cancel" to abandon the change, then press "Directories" or "Exit" to return to the idle display.

The following diagrams show a typical Buddy Status screen display of monitored telephones and a "My Status" display.

  • To view and change Presence settings:
    • Press the "Menu" key and select "Features" and then "Presence".

    • Choose "Buddy Status" to monitor the status of the contacts within your buddy list. This can also be accessed by pressing the "Buddies" soft key on the idle display.

    • The "Watcher List" shows the list of phones currently monitoring your status. Press the "Block" soft key to block a watcher.

Note: SwyxServer does not transmit any information that the status of a SwyxWare contact is monitored by another user to the appropriate telephone. Therefore, blocking internal SwyxWare users does not prevent these users from monitoring your status!

    • Choose "My Status" to change your own status (online, busy, etc.). This affects information only sent to external watching phones. The status is not signalled to the watching phone by SwyxServer but by the IP phones among each other without any communication with SwyxServer.

Presence information will also be sent to external watching phones when the user goes off-hook or invokes "Do Not Disturb". The "My Status" display can also be accessed by pressing the "MyStat" soft key from the idle display.

Note that changing your own status using the "My Status" or "Do Not Disturb" soft key is irrelevant for internal SwyxWare watching phones because this form of status signalling is not transmitted to internal phones!

    • Choose "Blocked List" to see which telephones you have blocked from monitoring your status. Press the "Unblock" soft key to unblock a contact. Blocking internal SwyxWare users does not prevent them from prevent these users from monitoring your status!

The configuration of the Polycom IP phone is completed now. It is possible to signal the following states of internal SwyxWare users:

• user logged off ("away"): LED blinking
• user logged on ("online"): LED off
• user busy ("busy"): LED on

Technical Details

Status queries about other users correspond to RFC 3856 "A Presence Event Package for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)" and use SIP SUBSCRIBE messages containing the "presence" event parameter. The current state of the observed user is transmitted within a SIP NOTIFY message which includes a XML content, usually in PIDF format according to RFC 3863 "Presence Information Data Format (PIDF)". The Polycom IP phones prefer the XPIDF format (Internet-Draft draft-rosenberg-impp-pidf-01 "A Data Format for Presence Using XML") which allows an extended range of presence states. However, NOTIFY messages containing a PIDF content body will be accepted too.
